CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – With the cold and slippery weather, the Champaign Police Department (CPD) urges citizens to drive safely with their top tips for winter driving.

The CPD encourages drivers to slow down and take their time when moving throughout the Champaign. The slippery conditions make the braking time necessary to stop a vehicle significantly increased. So far, over 20 vehicle crashes have been reported in Champaign and few have even resulted in transport to area hospitals and tows.

Here is the CPD’s winter weather driving tips:

  • If the weather is too bad, PLEASE STAY HOME!
  • Slow down in wet or icy conditions.
  • Keep your phone charged. Consider limiting apps that might waste battery power while driving.
  • Practice good car seat safety. Remove bulky coats and check all straps when tying in a little one.
  • Before you leave, give your car a safety check!
    • Check all fluids and make sure your windshield wiper fluid is rated for cold temperatures.
    • Replace wiper blades to keep your windshield clear.
    • Fill you fueld tank to prevent freezing and add extra weight.
    • Check that your car battery is holding a charge in the cold.
    • Examine the treat on tires to make sure they’re up to the trip.
  • Don’t just pack presents! Keep a safety kit in your car that includes:
    • A snow shovel
    • A broom
    • An ice scraper
    • Jumper cables
    • A flashlight
    • Flares or emergency markers
    • Blankets
    • A cell phone charger
    • Food and water
    • Any necessary medicine
    • Sand or kitty litter, in case you get stuc kin snow
