SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Illlinois is rolling out a new law to prevent theft of catalytic converters, making buying and selling metal safer.
The new law defines catalytic converts, the parts in a car that help control pollution, and detached catalytic converters, which have been taken out of a car. The law enforces that metal dealers must keep electronic records of every purchase including the seller’s name, address, vehicle information, and pictures of the metal. The law also ensures that metal items, especially detached catalytic converters, can’t be sold unless the dealer is licensed to prevent stolen items from being sold.
Metal dealers also cannot cash for catalytic converters worth $100 or more. The new law tracks who buys and sells metal, making it much more difficult for thieves to sell stolen catalytic converters. Following these rules will prevent theft and illegal sales.
