CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Police Deputy Chief Geoff Coon has recently announced his retirement.

Deputy Chief Coon is retiring on Friday, January 10 after more than 26 years of service. He began in 1998 at a patrol officer and served six years in the National Guard before his career as an officer. He held positions as Field Training Sergeant, K9 Unit Supervisor, and Training Sergeant. He was on CPD’s Walking Unit, worked with the Illinois State Police and Task Force Ten, was promoted to Lieutenant and then Deputy Chief permanently, worked with Crime Stoppers, was recognized as Law Enforcement Coordinator of the Year and National Coordinator of the Year in 2024.

“Geoff Coon is an exceptional officer, reflecting the highest standard of law enforcement and encouraging those around him to rise to the challenge,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. Commending his service, Chief Tyler highlighted Deputy Chief Coon’s contributions in managing complex units, applying for federal grants, and training a new generation of police officers.
